Backyard dig site in San Diego with a pile of clean excavated soilClean Dirt

What counts as clean dirt.

Clean dirt is soil without trash, wood, green waste, or hazardous material mixed in. Most dirt loads come from digging: ADU and room-addition dig-outs, footings, trenches, and yard leveling.

If the pile also has rock, roots, concrete, or asphalt, list each one when you ask for a quote. Send photos if you can. The written quote controls what is approved.

  • ✓ADU and addition dig-outs
  • ✓Footing and trench soil
  • ✓Yard leveling and grading soil
  • ✓Ask first about rock, roots, or concrete

Keep these out of a dirt load.

Do not mix household junk, wood, drywall, trash, sod, plants, or other green waste into the dirt. Mixed loads can change disposal options and cost.

Wet, unknown, imported, stained, or odd-smelling soil needs a separate review. Stop before loading and tell us where the soil came from.

  • ✓No trash or household junk
  • ✓No wood, drywall, or green waste
  • ✓No hazardous waste or liquids
  • ✓Call first about wet or unknown soil
Stakes, string, and a tape measure marking a dig area to estimate cubic yards of dirtHow Much Fits

Estimate your dirt before you book.

Measure the dig area in feet and the depth in inches. Multiply length by width by depth, then divide by 324 to get cubic yards. A 20 by 10 foot area dug 6 inches deep is about 3.7 cubic yards.

The lowboy holds a nominal 10 cubic yards. Dirt is heavy, so weight, moisture, and safe fill height can mean less belongs in one load. Use the calculator below to turn your square footage and depth into cubic yards and the number of lowboys to plan for.

Formula: square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324 = cubic yards. Each lowboy holds a nominal 10 cubic yards.

Enter the dig size and depth to see cubic yards and how many lowboys to plan for.

Dirt goes in the lowboy, not a regular dumpster.

Dirt can overload a standard roll-off long before it looks full. That is why dirt, concrete, and asphalt never go in our general-debris dumpsters.

The lowboy is 18 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 2 feet high, so a heavy load stays low. Load the dirt level, never above the top rail.

  • ✓18 ft long × 8 ft wide × 2 ft high
  • ✓5 days included
  • ✓Each extra day is $95
  • ✓Delivered across San Diego County

Plan the drop-off spot.

Pick a flat, firm spot with room for the 18-foot lowboy and a clear path for the delivery truck. Tell us where you want it and send a photo if you can, so we can check placement before dispatch.

Point out gates, tight turns, slopes, soft ground, low branches, wires, and parked cars before delivery day. If the dumpster needs to sit on a street or sidewalk, check whether a permit is required before delivery.

  • ✓Flat, firm surface
  • ✓Clear path for the truck
  • ✓Room for 18 ft × 8 ft
  • ✓Street placement may need a permit

How much dirt fits in a 10-yard lowboy?+
The lowboy holds a nominal 10 cubic yards. That is a volume estimate only. Dirt is heavy, and weight, moisture, and safe fill height can mean less belongs in one load. To estimate cubic yards, multiply length in feet by width in feet by depth in inches, then divide by 324.
How many lowboys do I need for my dirt?+
Find the square feet of the dig (length × width), multiply by the depth in inches, and divide by 324 to get cubic yards. Divide the cubic yards by 10 and round up. For example, 400 square feet dug 12 inches deep is about 14.8 cubic yards, so plan for 2 lowboys. Weight and moisture can mean more loads; your written quote confirms the number.

No. Dirt, concrete, and asphalt do not go in a general-debris dumpster. Clean dirt goes in the 10-yard lowboy.
Can I mix dirt with rock, roots, concrete, or trash?+
Ask before loading. List every material and send photos so we can confirm the right plan. Never mix trash, wood, drywall, or green waste into a dirt load.

Stop before loading and tell us where the soil came from and what it looks like. Wet, unknown, imported, stained, odd-smelling, or possibly contaminated soil needs a separate review and may need a different disposal plan.
